An Unreal Tournament 3 map created to learn and explore the UDK. This was a fantastic learning experience, teaching me the basics of the Unreal Editor. The map's fun too!
I felt that my experience in Valve's Hammer Editor could only take me so far, so I decided to explore UDK and the Unreal Editor. I settled on creating a small deathmatch map for Unreal Tournament 3, which would be suitable for 2-4 players (mainly for myself to duel against bots). I drew up an overview of the map, considering some of the things that I noticed were common in the official maps. These were: the rocket launcher weapon in the centre of the map, on high ground; small health vials grouped in corners; jump pads and stairs; and other weapons on ground level. This would hopefully lead in to a fun and fast paced deathmatch map.
I began blocking out the map using BSP geometry. This was much different to the method used in Hammer, but it was not a problem once I learned the method. I then added the important gameplay features, namely the weapon and health pickups, along with the jump pads. Textures were then applied, again, in a different way to Hammer, and I experienced difficulty aligning various faces. Hopefully this will be resolved with experience! Once the geometry had been textured, I added various models. I found it quite hard to compose the scene using Epic's models - I suppose the majority are custom built for each map, rather than Valve's approach of re-using as many assets as possible, in a variety of different ways. My next UDK project would certainly use my own assets, making the process more streamlined.
